Exploring the Rich History of Allegheny City: Pittsburgh’s Northside and the Legacy of East Ohio Street

Pittsburgh’s Northside is a dynamic and diverse area with a rich history that traces back to its roots as Allegheny City. Established in 1788, Allegheny City began as an independent municipality and thrived as a hub of innovation, industry, and community until its annexation by Pittsburgh in 1907. Today, its legacy is evident in our Northside’s neighborhoods, architecture, and culture.

From Allegheny City to the Northside

In 1783, Pennsylvania set aside 3,000 acres north of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers to create what would become Allegheny City. By 1784, surveyor John Redick laid out a grid of 36 city blocks surrounded by common grazing land, currently known as Allegheny Commons. This gave way to a flourishing community, which by the late 19th century, became Pennsylvania’s third-largest city.

The annexation of Allegheny City into Pittsburgh in 1907, was controversial, and forever changed the area. The industrial strength, diverse population, and tight-knit neighborhoods of Allegheny City became a core part of Pittsburgh’s growing metropolis. Today, the Northside celebrates this legacy, blending historical charm with modern vibrancy.

East Ohio Street: A Living Legacy

East Ohio Street has long been a key artery in the Northside, serving as a bustling commercial corridor. In its early days, it housed markets, shops, and businesses that catered to the community’s every need, including the famous Allegheny Market House. Today, East Ohio Street remains a vital hub for commerce, dining, and community events. Its revitalization is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Northside’s residents and businesses. Bistro is excited to be a part of this living legacy.
