In 1783, Pennsylvania set aside 3,000 acres north of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers to create what would become Allegheny City. By 1784, surveyor John Redick laid out a grid of 36 city blocks surrounded by common grazing land, currently known as Allegheny Commons. This gave way to a flourishing community, which by the late 19th century, became Pennsylvania’s third-largest city.

The annexation of Allegheny City into Pittsburgh in 1907, was controversial, and forever changed the area.
