Barbara Burns, along with other shop owners, were putting everything on the line to bring new life to East Ohio Street. The new Priory Bakery, an extension of Ed & Mary Ann Graf’s Priory Grand Hotel simply glistened, and really reflected Deutschtown’s German heritage.
How captivating it all was – the charm underneath was beginning to show signs of surfacing. The affluence was visible as business walked from the banks… past the beggars and the men drinking early morning fifths in the alley. Unfortunately, perception was still a deterrent.
Was this really a place for a restaurant that would provide a living and bring about change? Maybe taking a page from Barbara, Ed and Mary Anne was just what I needed to do. Maybe I needed to put it on the line as well.
